Science Museum at Wroughton

The Science Museum at Wroughton is home to the Science Museum’s large-object store and its Library and Archive.

The object stores are closed to the public except for pre-booked tours in the summer months.

Like most museums, the Science Museum is able to display only a fraction of its collection at any one time. Of over 220,000 objects, around 8% are currently on display in our galleries at South Kensington, London. The remainder are stored at our small-object store in West London and at the Science Museum at Wroughton until they are needed for new exhibitions.

The Science Museum at Wroughton is a Second World War maintenance airfield in Wiltshire and has been occupied by the Science Museum since the 1970s. Six original aircraft hangars house items from the science, engineering, transport and agricultural reserve collections. There is also a research store, built in 1993, which has a stable environment and is ideal for sensitive objects. These are working stores and, as such, are not open to the public except for pre-booked behind-the-scenes tours during the summer months and occasional special events.
